The day I left home for college was one that I will never forget. The night prior to leaving, I spent with friends in my living room. We were talking, reminiscing about the past and what could be to come in our futures. It was a sad occasion to be leaving the place I grew up. I was scared to be leaving my small corner of the world that was so familiar. I mean, what would I possibly do without my family and friends? They got me through thick and thin and now I was moving 2 and a half hours away from the people I loved the most.
That morning I awoke, with having gotten barely any sleep at all. It was so early, that the sun had yet to rise. It was an unusual feeling. I never imagined actually leaving my home. I would picture myself away in a dorm, living the life of a college student but I never imagined the day I would actually pack my belongings and leave. My mom, dad, and I packed the car silently and when I was all set to go, I went and woke up my 15 year old brother to say goodbye. He hugged me goodbye and gave me his favorite jacket that we would always fight over. I would always borrow it, and he would always get mad that I wore it more than he did. I started to cry thinking of how much I was going to miss him and the rest of my family.
Now that I have been away from home for a semester, I still miss my family and friends immensely. However, I realize that I am settled and happy living on my own. I have made even more close friends in addition to my friends at home. I have grown as a person and learned a lot about myself over the past semester. I am independent and love my new friends. Looking around now, I cannot imagine my life any differently. I will always love and have my family and friends at home where ever my life takes me. However, now I have the opportunity to meet loads of new people and spend time with my new friends here at school.

On this day in history.
Every once in a great while there comes a day that will forever be etched in the memory of every American and even the memories of people across the globe. These days are far with much in-between but every once in a great while they do occur. Sometimes these days are immortalized because they are unfortunate, such as the day Kennedy was assonated, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and the unfortunate occurrence of September 11th. This past Tuesday became one of these days, however not because of a tragedy. As of Tuesday, January 20th 2009, Barack Obama was officially sworn into office as our newest president of the United States. This day will forever be remembered in history.
Unfortunately for me, I do not have any extraordinary stories to tell about this historic day. For me, Tuesday remained to be ordinary and seemingly uneventful, despite the meaning of the day for our country. It all began when I woke up for class, showered and then left twenty minutes before my class began. At the time of the inauguration, I was sitting in my first class of the day at 11am which happened to be my philosophy class, ‘the ideals of democracy’. We went about class as normal and I listened to my professor lead a discussion on the beliefs of liberalism, or some related topic. Political philosophy wasn’t really my forte. When class was over, I walk to the library and studied for some time before I decided to get some lunch before my next class. So, after I was through eating, I walked to my last class of the day, which was mass communication. I listened to my professor lecture on the critiques of mass communication and the power money has in the field. After class was finished, I went back to my dorm and finished my homework for the next day. As I said before, the historic day was uneventful to me. I’m sure that I will always be able to tell of where I was when Obama was inaugurated and recall some details; however, my story just won’t be very interesting to tell to others.
As for the inauguration that I didn’t get to watch, I didn’t really hear too much about it. There was the anticipated buzz among people about their favorite parts, but nothing seemed to stand out to me since I wasn’t able to watch it myself. While talking to my roommate, who was able to watch it, later that evening, she mentioned that she was not overly impressed about the speech Obama made. She simply thought that the speech could have been better. I think that this could have had to do with the all the publicity running up to the inauguration. From all the commercials, advertisements, and press for the event her expectations were set extremely high, almost guaranteeing the disappointment if something were to go wrong. The last thing I will mention is the cost of the inauguration. This year’s ceremony has made history in more than just one way. The government has never before spent so much money on an inauguration. Yes, I will say that I do believe that there is a call to celebrate this historic event, but at the same time, I cannot help but to think of what else we could be putting that money towards. With our country already in debt and our economy already said to be bad, I just wonder how much good such an elaborate inauguration is really worth when the money could be out towards something much more helpful for all.

The introduction
Hello there. The name is Sammy. I grew up in a small town about an hour north of St. Louis where I have lived nearly all my life. I guess you could say that I am a small town girl with small town values. I am a very reserved, quiet person until I really get to know you. Once I get past the shy part though, I never shut up. I always have something to say or a random story to tell. And that is another thing important about me that you should be aware of. I am random. I absolutely love spontaneity and just seeing where I end up. This little fact about me can help explain how I have not yet declared a major of study. I just simply cannot see myself doing one thing for the rest of my life. I have too many different interests to tend to. For starters, I absolutely love music and theatre. Until college, I have always been very involved in the fine arts. Through performing, enjoying, or backstage work, the fine arts have been a huge part of my life since grade school.
Another interest that I have always had is sports, specifically softball and tennis. Although I do not play softball anymore on an actual team, I would say that it is one of my favorite past times. I just started playing tennis recently in the past few years, but I wish I had discovered it sooner.
I also love photography. I always have my camera on me wherever I go and I am always snapping pictures. This may sound cheesy, but I want to capture the beauty of life. With photos, one can feel as if they are actually there with you seeing the same things as you, even if they are miles away. Each and every picture is worth a thousand words and has its own story and memory.
And for a few concluding random facts about me; some would consider me to be a movie buff. Audrey Hepburn is my favorite. I am a sucker for cheesy 80s’ movies, chick flicks and comedies’. I love Harry Potter, High School Musical, and the Twilight Saga. I don’t watch television with the exceptions of one tree hill, gossip girl, and the office. And above all, I love God, my family, and my friends. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I would have nothing. And I would do anything for them in a heartbeat.
